Lou Lalli undertook stone
sculpture in 1984 and since
then has been deeply and
continuously involved in the art.
During his former primary
career as a consulting
engineer, work assignments
gave him the opportunity to visit
ancient sites rich in stone
sculpture. Aphrodisias, Ephesus,
Pergamon, Luxor and Borobudur,
are some of the sites that imparted, a
strong sense of the past and
the prominence of stone sculpture
in our history. These sites
coupled with visits to major
museums in Europe form the
basis of a self taught art education
and afforded him a well of ideas
to draw upon. The techniques
of direct stone carving were learned
from working with skilled stone
sculptors/carvers in a studio
environment.
Retiring from engineering
practice in 2001, enabled
Lou to participate in the Yonkers
"Sculpture in The Meadow" project,
giving him the opportunity to
work a large-scale piece titled
"Fish Love Seat", executed in Danby
White Marble.
He presently works at the
School of Visual Arts, Sculpture
Studio, in New York and at
the Carving Studio and Sculpture
Center in Rutland Vermont.
